Lake Okabena is possibly THE most consistently windy lake in the Midwest. It is situated off the tip of a land formation called “Buffalo Ridge” in South Dakota. Buffalo Ridge directs wind down towards the southwest corner of Minnesota; Specifically directly over Lake Okabena. This makes for amazing windsurfing conditions for both beginners and professionals!
One of the unique things about Lake Okabena is that it is, in it’s nature, a Lake. Why do we point this out? Well, it’s because it provides a unique opportunity for Windsurfing to become a spectator sport. Most races are held on the coastal regions and the races take place miles out to sea. At the Worthington Windsurfing Regatta the races take place just off shore. This makes for an event that is both fun to race in, and fun to watch!
